What does microneedling do for your skin?
A microneedling device passes fine needles over the skin and leaves thousands of tiny channels. Your body repairs each one, and that repair builds collagen. The American Academy of Dermatology calls it collagen induction therapy and lists it for acne scars, uneven texture and tone, large pores, and fine lines.

Does microneedling hurt?

Cleveland Clinic reports the same sensation, and adds that needles near bony areas such as your cheekbones can feel more uncomfortable. We apply a numbing cream and let it work before we start, and I stop the moment you tell me a pass feels sharp.
How long is the downtime after microneedling, day by day?
Count on about five days. Cleveland Clinic says skin can be red and swollen that long, with dry flaking that improves once you moisturize. The AAD puts the reaction at a few days to a week, and says wait 24 hours before makeup.

Who should not get microneedling?
Wait or skip it, per the AAD and Cleveland Clinic, if you:
- have active acne, a skin infection, or frequent skin rashes
- get keloids or heal slowly
- have a blood disorder
- are in cancer treatment or radiation, or have weakened immunity
- have a tan or a sunburn right now
- took isotretinoin in the last month
- have eczema or psoriasis on the area, or a mole that is changing
