Surgery disturbs the small lymphatic channels under the skin, so fluid collects in the treated areas while they heal. That is the swelling and tightness of the first weeks. Manual lymphatic drainage uses light, rhythmic strokes that guide fluid toward healthy nodes. Cleveland Clinic describes the pressure as light and says the massage reduces swelling, though it notes that providers mainly use the technique for lymphedema after breast cancer surgery. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says the compression garment you wear after liposuction is what minimizes swelling, so treat the massage as support for your recovery rather than the deciding factor in your result.
What happens in your first post-op massage session?
A post-op session is nothing like a deep tissue massage. The pressure is light and precise, focused on moving fluid rather than forcing tissue. I work around your incisions, follow your surgeon's guidance, and adjust to your stage of healing. Every appointment is one on one, in English or Spanish.
Bring to your first appointment:
- Your surgeon's aftercare instructions, in writing if you have them
- Your surgery date and the procedure you had
- Your faja or compression garment
- Any questions you wrote down between follow-ups
When should you call your surgeon instead of booking a post-op massage?
Cleveland Clinic lists these as reasons to contact your provider after liposuction:
- Long-lasting or severe pain
- Swelling
- Fluid or blood leaking from the surgical site
- A fever
- Shortness of breath or chest pain
Call your surgeon first. If something feels wrong during your appointment, I stop and ask you to check in with them before we go on. The NIH rates the risk of harm from massage as low, and even so, no massage replaces a surgical follow-up.
Can post-op massage prevent fibrosis?
Fibrosis is the firm or uneven tissue that can form while you heal. Many surgeons include lymphatic massage in their aftercare, but the sources I can point you to do not settle whether it prevents fibrosis. Your surgeon sets your schedule and tells you how much pressure your healing tissue can take. Firm wood tools belong to a later stage, so maderotherapy waits until your surgeon clears you for them.
