Wood Therapy vs Lymphatic Drainage: Which?

What is the difference between maderotherapy and lymphatic drainage massage?

Maderotherapy, also called wood therapy, is a body sculpting massage with roots in Colombian wellness traditions. I'm Berenice Casneiro, and in a maderotherapy session in Dallas I work with wooden rollers, sculpting boards, and cups, each shaped for one area of the body. The strokes are firm and repetitive, and they follow the lines of your waist, abdomen, legs, glutes, or arms.

Lymphatic drainage massage in Dallas uses hands only, with slow, light strokes that follow the path of your lymphatic system. Cleveland Clinic describes that system as a network of organs, vessels, and tissues that moves lymph back into your circulation, and says the pulsing of nearby arteries and the squeezing of nearby muscles are what keep that fluid moving.

Maderotherapy Lymphatic drainage
Booked for Body contour and the look of cellulite Bloating, puffiness, heavy legs
Pressure Firm, with wooden tools Feather-light, hands only
How it feels Intense and warming; it should not hurt Slow and calming
Typical plan A series of 5 to 10, one to three times a week Every 2 to 4 weeks, or weekly before an event
Single session at BC $99, about 60 minutes $99, 75 minutes

How does maderotherapy feel compared with lymphatic drainage?

Maderotherapy is the stronger of the two. I start with warming strokes, move through the wooden tools in sequence, and finish with draining movements toward the lymph nodes. The pressure sits firmer than a relaxation massage. It should not hurt, and I adjust it to your comfort through the whole session. Light redness is normal and fades within a few hours. Tell me before we start if you bruise easily.

Lymphatic drainage sits at the other end of the scale. Cleveland Clinic describes it as a gentle technique done with light pressure. I open the main lymph node groups first, then guide fluid toward them with wave-like strokes. Some clients fall asleep on the table. Expect to use the restroom more often for the rest of the day.

Which should you book: maderotherapy or lymphatic drainage?

Start with your goal, then with the pressure you enjoy.

Book maderotherapy if:

  • You want contour in the waist, abdomen, legs, glutes, or arms.
  • The look of cellulite bothers you and you can commit to a series.
  • You like a firm massage.

Book lymphatic drainage if:

  • You feel bloated or puffy, or your legs feel heavy after a day of sitting, standing, or flying.
  • You want to feel lighter before a wedding or another event.
  • You prefer a quiet, gentle session.

Neither one is a weight loss treatment, and results vary from body to body. If you had cosmetic surgery in recent weeks, neither list applies until your surgeon clears you, and the section further down explains why.

Does maderotherapy help lymphatic drainage? What the research says

Every maderotherapy session I do ends with draining strokes toward the lymph nodes, and clients tell me they leave feeling lighter and less bloated. Treat that as client experience. Wood therapy has almost no research of its own, so I make no lymphatic promise for the wooden tools.

The same caution applies to cellulite. The American Academy of Dermatology reviewed a spa device that pairs deep massage with a vacuum tool: the results were temporary, and cellulite tended to return within a month of stopping. Cleveland Clinic goes further and says most spa treatments diminish the dimples for a few hours after a session, with no scientific evidence behind massage, cupping, or rollers. That is why I sell maderotherapy as a series with upkeep, and why it does not remove fat.

Lymphatic drainage has deeper clinical roots, in a different setting. Cleveland Clinic presents it as a treatment for lymphedema, swelling that often follows breast cancer surgery, and adds that people without lymphedema may not see meaningful results. In a spa, book it as a gentle massage that many clients say leaves them less puffy.

Can you combine maderotherapy and lymphatic drainage?

Yes, and at BC the two already overlap. My maderotherapy packages list lymphatic drainage support, and the body packages (Body Sculpting, VIP Body Transformation, Men's Body Definition) list both techniques alongside machine work such as radiofrequency.

If you want both, we map them out at your consultation: which areas the wooden tools work, how often you come in, and where a full drainage session fits around them.

Who should skip maderotherapy or lymphatic drainage?

Most healthy adults can book either one, and I do a short intake before your first session. Check with your doctor first in these cases:

  • Before maderotherapy: you are pregnant, you have a circulatory condition, or you are recovering from recent surgery.
  • Before lymphatic drainage: Cleveland Clinic lists blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, heart disease, kidney failure, an active infection, cellulitis, a fever, and a history of stroke as reasons to avoid this massage.

After cosmetic surgery, your surgeon decides which massage you can have and when it starts. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons describes post-surgical lymphatic massage as a low-pressure technique, the opposite of firm wooden tools. Bring your surgeon's instructions to your appointment. Our post-op lymphatic massage in Dallas page and the post-op massage recovery guide explain how we work inside them.

Neither treatment is medical care. If you have swelling you cannot explain, see a doctor before you book a massage.

Frequently asked questions

Is maderotherapy or lymphatic drainage better for cellulite?

Maderotherapy is the one clients book for the look of cellulite, because the firm strokes work the dimpled areas. Expect temporary smoothing that needs upkeep: the American Academy of Dermatology reports that results from the massage device it reviewed faded within a month of stopping. Lymphatic drainage moves fluid, so it suits puffiness more than skin texture.

Does maderotherapy hurt more than lymphatic drainage?

You will feel the difference, since maderotherapy uses firm pressure and lymphatic drainage uses feather-light pressure. Maderotherapy should still not be painful. I adjust the pressure to your comfort through the session, so tell me the moment a stroke feels sharp.

How many sessions of maderotherapy or lymphatic drainage do I need?

For maderotherapy I usually recommend a series of 5 to 10 sessions, and a change in contour tends to show after 4 to 6 consistent ones. For lymphatic drainage, every two to four weeks works for upkeep, or weekly for a few weeks before an event. Results vary and need maintenance.

Which costs more in Dallas, maderotherapy or lymphatic drainage?

Neither. A single session of either one at BC Beauty Spa is $99. Only maderotherapy has its own multi-session packs, which bring the price down to $69.90 a session in the 10 pack.

Can I get maderotherapy after liposuction or a BBL?

Follow your surgeon's instructions. If you are recovering from recent surgery, I ask you to check with your doctor before any maderotherapy session. Our post-op lymphatic massage page explains how we work within a surgeon's plan.

This article is general education, not medical advice. If you are recovering from surgery or managing a health condition, your doctor's instructions always come first.
